BOOK INTRODUCTION
The worst advice I’ve
ever gotten, without a doubt, was to cure a hangover with alcohol.
The saying was presented to me innocently enough. They said
the cure to a hangover is to get a hair off the tail of the
dog that bit you.
That saying can directly be translated into, if drinking hurts,
drink some more to feel better. If I had only suffered through
every hangover in the morning, and kept my “no drinking
before noon” rule, maybe I would have been safe. As a
young person, please never follow that advice. My body hurt
for a reason. Take the hangover pain as a signal. It’s
better to learn to quit drinking and have a better tomorrow.
Better yet, don’t start drinking alcohol. I will share
the path it led to for me, and hopefully my story is reason
enough not to cross the line.
My life began as promising and rewarding, then led to sickness
and wasted years. Only by the grace of God, am I alive and free
again. I learned no matter how smart, good-looking, nice, and
hard-working a person is, that doesn’t preclude alcohol
from destroying their life. I went to the deep trenches of alcoholism,
beat the odds, and made it out. Luckily, I am much better off
having been through the misery and distress. Those difficult
years were the greatest problem I have ever faced. The years
after were the greatest challenge, and also the most precious.
I probably should be dead, except that there must be a reason
I’ve been spared, perhaps for this book to help others.
I am more humble and grateful, have a new found love of life,
and each and every day I’m winning.
